An arched gateway built in early 20th century , The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the arrival of first British monarch to visit India, King-Emperor George V and Queen-Empress Mary to Mumbai in December 1911 the first British monarch to visit India. Explicitly carved with intricate latticework, Gateway of India is also the start and end port for ferry and yachts to Elephanta Caves.

UNESCO World Heritage Site of Elephanta Caves are on Elephanta Island in Arabian sea, just about an hour away by ferry or yacht from Gateway of India in Mumbai. The sculpture representing three aspects of Hindu god Shiva: the Creator, the Preserver, and the Destroyer have been carved in rocks Elephanta caves of mid-5th to 6th centuries AD.

Once at the isalnd, steep steps lead to the caves and is bit difficult for physically challenged travelers. However the services of Palkis (small chairs lifted by 4 persons) are available.

The facade of the Prince of Wales Museum (now known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya ) is a sight to behold in itself.
