The history of Golf in India starts since 1829 when the first ever Golf Course outside the British Isle was opened in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) and was named as Royal Calcutta Golf Club. The passion for golfing in India grew rapidly as Bombay Golf Club was formed in 1842 followed by Bangalore and Madras (now known as Chennai) were ready by 1885.

Varied topography of the country owes a lot to golf in India. Many of these challenging and modern courses are designed by international names like Robert Trent Jones Jr, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, Ronald Fream and Phil Ryan.

Best time to play golf in India is between October to March when it is almost no rain, low humidity and mild winters.
