The history of Golf in India starts since 1829 when the first ever Golf Course outside the British Isle was opened in Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) and was named as Royal Calcutta Golf Club. The passion for golfing in India grew rapidly as Bombay Golf Club was formed in 1842 followed by Bangalore and Madras (now known as Chennai) were ready by 1885.

Varied topography of the country owes a lot to golf in India.
